Yes! Telehealth and virtual education services have both been proven to be efficacious and preferred by many clients and families! Although telehealth was allowable before the pandemic, it became used more widely due to quarantine mandates and families have noticed that the results are amazing and the convenience is unbeatable. Don't just take our word for it! Research has proven that virtual services are appropriate and can be just as effective as in-person services. Telehealth was approved by ASHA as a viable service in 2005 and ASHA published a position statement indicating that teletherapy is an appropriate model of service delivery. You can find a plethora of information and research articles to support this, but we have included a few things for you to check out!
The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association
"Findings indicated that instructional reading and spelling instruction delivered via telepractice can be feasible and engaging, and may be as effective as in-person delivery for school-aged students with reading and/or writing difficulties."
"On surveys and questionnaires, participants indicated they would be willing to receive services via telepractice again and they would be very likely to recommend telepractice to others. While convenience and satisfaction were highly rated, overall satisfaction between in-person and telepractice participants were not significantly different."
You can use any device that can access the internet, has a camera and has a microphone such as a desktop computer, laptop, tablet, phone or iPad. Some clients prefer to use noise-canceling headphones as well. We will train you how to use your device to access your services and make the most out of technology during our time together!
Telehealth can be appropriate for all ages when a parent, caregiver or teacher is helping. We can train a helper (a.k.a. facilitator) to facilitate the sessions with children or adults with cognitive-communication deficits. We can do family sessions, parent-directed training, caregiver-directed therapy and observations. Children and adults who can utilize the computer independently have great success during telehealth sessions or virtual education programs. We always help you get started with a trial run a few minutes before your first session. If you aren't sure if telehealth is right for you, we can always give it a try and see how it goes. There are many strategies we can use to make the process easy and troubleshoot any barriers. Don't rule it out without giving it a try. Contact us with any questions and we will see how we can best serve you!
