A tongue thrust is an immature or disordered swallowing pattern in which the tongue protrudes through the anterior incisors during swallowing, speech production and while the tongue is at rest in the mouth. This often leads to malocclusion or misalignment of the teeth and subsequent articulation disorders, including lisping.
Correcting a tongue thrust requires collaboration between the dentist or orthodontist and the speech-language pathologist who is specially trained in resolving this condition.
Treatment of swallowing disorders and habitual tongue thrusting involves the implementation of orofacial myofunctional therapy to target the muscles of the tongue, face, cheeks and lips paired with specialized speech therapy techniques to improve speech sound production. These techniques play a crucial role in orthodontic treatment as well, making the results long-lasting and easier to achieve. Unresolved tongue thrusting, will impede the ability of braces to align the teeth properly.
